Artist Statement

My work consists of a logo that represents me as a person. For this project, I chose to draw a sunflower to be the logo that I “tattoo” on my forehead.

The sunflower is the perfect representation of who I am as a person. These flowers are mostly associated with the sun since they turn to it whenever it comes out until sunset. Most people in my life always relate me to the sun because I love the heat and always try to be out in the sun. Also, my friends tell me that I remind them of the sun because I’m a bubbly and active person that is a “ray of sunshine”. I mostly relate to the sun because of my love for the beach and the abundance of sun that I see back home at Puerto Rico.

I created this work because it is a reminder of back home and the life I lived in the island. My overall vision of the work was to also represent the qualities that I possess. It is said that sunflowers are a representation of loyalty. I am extremely loyal to my friends and family, always wanting what is best for them. Like the flower, I always look for the brightness of the sun to light up my way and bring a little warmth into my life.

The sources I used as inspiration are the Lego sunflowers I have in my desk. They helped me draw the perfect picture of how I wanted my logo to look like. I believe that the colors are not such an important technique in my logo specifically because they were not chosen to send a specific message. I believe the most important technique were the petals because it gives more depth to the tattoo and brings more details of life to the flower.

Therefore, the sunflower was the drawing that I chose for this project. I believe I relate to the symbolism of the flower and everything it represents. Overall, this project was enjoyable and made me analyze who I am and what I would want my logo to look like.
